Lesbian teacher sues over jibes

by Paul Cheston, Courts Correspondent
A lesbian teacher is in court today claiming that she was sexually harassed by pupils who taunted her about her sexuality.

Shirley Pearce, 53, says she was hounded out of her job by the abuse and is demanding compensation from the school which she says failed to prevent her being called such names as "lezzie" and "dyke".

When she complained, she said her headmaster told her to "grit her teeth" and suggested she could "run away" if it was too much for her. The school is being represented by the Prime Minister's wife Cherie Booth, QC.
