The other day I was hiking in the woods, which are gloriously colorful right now, and I
wondered if the terrorists have ever, even for a moment, paused to enjoy the beauty of
nature, the miracle of life on Earth. A recent statement by an al Qaeda spokesman
comes to mind: "There are thousands of young people who look forward to death like
the Americans look forward to life." My guess is that this guy's not interested in joining
the Sierra Club.

That pretty much sums up a major part of the difference between "them" and "us," whoever "them" and "us" may be.

For the most part, Americans are focused on improving our lives, moving forward, enjoying the blessings of liberty. Oh, we carp and complain, but I think very few Americans would voluntarily prefer to live in Afghanistan or Palestine or Sudan or such.

I am tremendously proud of my son and the other mostly young men and women in uniform who are prepared to lay their lives on the line to protect those liberties we enjoy. But I haven't a single one of those young men and women who look forward to death, or who believe that dying is better than living.

Nor have I met a single one of them who would volutarily fly a civilian airplane loaded with passengers into a civiling building with the intent to kill as many civilians as possible.

That just isn't in our national character.

Thank God.
