That was the worst. I injured my back badly on a shore breaker while body surfing at Playa del Rey. That isn't a particularly bad beach, but there were some significant waves at times when a storm blew hard in the West Pacific. The south facing beaches were much worse. La Jolla is notorious for the rips.

I saw an video taken earlier this year of one of these mega-rips. It was taken by a person riding as a passenger in an open cockpit plane off the coast there at La Jolla. The thing looked like a hurricane made out of brown water. There was even an eye of foam. The water was brown from all the sand in suspension. This thing must have been 1/4 in radius.
