"Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. long-distance carrier, said on Wednesday that third-quarter profit fell 60 percent, citing further erosion in its long-distance business and the downturn in the U.S. economy. In a related development, Sprint canceled its much-ballyhooed "ION" initiative to combine all its major services into one package for customers. The move will cost 6,000 workers their jobs and result in a $2 billion charge in the fourth quarter"

more job cuts because the turnaround is "just around the corner"....

Nasdaq Teams with eBay to Support
Auction for America

South African Mining Company Durban Roodepoort Deep to Contribute
1-Kilo Gold Bar at Nasdaq MarketSite Presentation on Wednesday

New York, NY –The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. today announced that it has joined with eBay to support Auction for America – eBay’s online effort to raise funds for those affected by the September 11 attacks. As part of this campaign, Nasdaq is reaching out to its universe of Nasdaq-listed companies, member firms and partners encouraging them to join in the program. Durban Roodepoort Deep, Ltd. (Nasdaq SCM:DROOY), a South African gold mining company listed on the Nasdaq Small Cap Market, is one of the first companies to participate, contributing a specially embossed 1-kilogram gold bar to Auction for America.

Mark Wellesley-Wood, chairman and chief executive officer of Durban Roodepoort Deep presented Nasdaq chairman and chief executive officer Wick Simmons with the gold bar at a brief ceremony at the MarketSite at 11 am on October 17. Mr. Wellesley-Wood commented, “Although our home market is in South Africa, we rely heavily on Nasdaq for our liquidity and trading. We have been touched by the Twin Towers tragedy and hope that our contribution will help the families and victims of the terrible events of September 11.”

A separate donation of a 2001 Bentley Arnage Red Label motor car, which will be available for auction on eBay shortly, was made by a board member of a Nasdaq-listed company who wished to remain anonymous.

These donations are posted on eBay as part of Auction for America which can be found at members.ebay.com or www.eBay.com or www.ebay.com/auctionforamerica. Nasdaq is planning to announce its own donation to Auction for America shortly.

Wick Simmons, chairman and chief executive officer of Nasdaq said, “We are truly grateful for Durban Roodepoort Deep and Mr. Wellesley-Wood’s thoughtful donation to eBay’s Auction for America. The donation of the gold bar, as well as the Bentley, demonstrates a true sense of community not only within this country but outside the United States, as well. We are also moved by the continued outpouring of generosity from so many Nasdaq-listed companies, member firms and partners who have contributed to various relief efforts and are helping make a difference in this challenging time.”
