If indeed this is the prevailing opinion held by the average arab, then democracy is not on their things-to-do list. You may be right. I hesitated to post this here but I will now. I recall an incident here in Washington during my college days while working at a restaurant part-time. One of my co-workers was Palestinian aged about 27-30. He was generally a very pleasant and friendly man to work alongside. However, one day, during a break, the discussion turned to Middle East turmoil. One person questioned Palestinian terror attacks. When these words were spoken, the man's eyes bulged, his veins throbbed and everyone took one big step back. I asked him why the sudden rage at a fair opinion? He then picked up an 8-inch steak knife, brandished it in my face and said if I said another word I would face the consequences. This is a true story. There were half a dozen witnesses. It was a shocking experience, how so suddenly raging violence could erupt. This kind of thing is what we're up against, and we had better not back away from it. (Incidentally I did not press charges but told him threats such as that one were unwise in a free country, and left it at that.)

Appropos of democracy, a Washington Post columnist spent some time talking with youngsters who attend a Muslim school in the D. C. suburb of Potomac in Maryland It appears we have our own American version of Pakistan's maddrassis (sp?). It' a disturbing piece. Unfortunately, my computer's copy and paste mechanism is on the blink but I do think it offers an unusual and revealing and scary insight into what is being taught, at least at that Islamic school. The piece was carried yesterday (Tuesday) in the Post Metro Section.
