Loss of AT&T Net service for some attributed to transfer problems

By Bruce Mohl, Globe Staff, 10/17/2001

Some AT&T Broadband customers in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire have been without Internet service for a week or more after the company experienced problems in transferring customers to a newly installed server in Chelmsford that assigns Internet protocol addresses. A valid address is needed to gain access to the Internet.

A message on the company's toll-free service line said high-speed Internet service customers in those states may face ''connectivity'' problems. ''Our AT&T engineers are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible,'' the message says.

But three AT&T customers in Newton, Cambridge, and Hingham said company suggestions for fixing the problem had not worked for them. They said their service had been down for a week or more.

Ugh. I'm considering buying a fast-food franchise and getting out of the business.
