Why is it called the New Testament? Testament comes from testamentum, the word by which the Latin ecclesiastical writers translated the Greek diatheke. With the profane authors this latter term means always the legal disposition a man makes of his goods after his death. However, at an early date, the Alexandrian translators of the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, known as the Septuagint, employed the word as the equivalent of the Hebrew berith, which means a pact, an alliance or covenant, more especially the alliance of Yahweh with Israel. In other words, New Testament is simply another word for New Covenant. In St. Paul (I Cor., xi, 25) Jesus uses the words "new testament" as meaning the alliance established by Himself between God and the world, and this is called "new" as opposed to that of which Moses was the mediator which was the old covenant fulfilled by Christ. The prophet Jeremiah had prophesied about the change from the old to the new covenant. Jeremiah 31 31: Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people." The Holy Spirit gave St. Paul additional information about Jesus fulfillment this replacement of the old covenant with the New! Hebrew 8 6: But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7: For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. 8: For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 9: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. 10: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people... And finally Hebrews 8 conclude: 12: For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away In conclusion we can say that Christ has fulfilled the old and that the new has waxed old and died. What we are observing in Israel today is the attempted resurrection of the old by the Zionist Jews and the fundamentalist Christian Zionists. According to the New Covenant there is no longer a wall of partition between Jews and non-Jews. All who believe in Christ are of the seed of Abraham and heirs to all the promises of Abraham. Romans 2 28: For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Galatians 3 27: For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29: And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
