Jim,

<What matters is that X-box sales don't come at AMDs expense>

Of course they are at AMD's expense. Did'nt AMD compete for and lost out on the X-Box CPU business?

Jim, <a 1900+ and more is what they need in the short run.>

If the nForce chipset offers the performance improvement everyone is hoping for, AMD will rename their 1.53 GHz Athlon XP from 1800+ to 1900+.

Jim, I look at Intel's XBox sales this way. Intel now has an AMD-sized chunk of the most important chip in the gamer's console market. Probably about 5-10% by the end of the year.

But I think there is room for another CPU company in gamer's consoles.

As for the loss, I consider it to be about $170m, the amount by which book value went down.
Similarly, Intel had a loss of $836m, the amount by which their book value went down.

The AMD loss is not nearly as scary as Q3, 1999. Here's a comparison:
....................................1999..............2001...............Intel 1999............Intel 2001
Sales...............................662.............766......................7,328..................6,545
Book Value....................1,919.........3,631....................29,182................35,902
Cash+ST Investments.....377............904....................11,891..................9,158
LongTermDebt............1,449............796..........................884.....................972

AMD has a cash cushion in never had in 1999.
