It was Paterno's 1994 team, which went unbeaten but was unable to play for the national title because it was obligated to play in the Rose Bowl, that was one of the big motivators for the Big Ten aligning with the BCS. ''That's what I recall,'' Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said Wednesday. ''The BCS doesn't answer all the questions, but it gives us a 1-2 title game and it keeps the bowl system intact. To be fair to Joe, he's always been an an NFL-style college football playoff guy. He went along with the BCS, but he wasn't excited about it.'' Regarding Paterno's complaint that the Big Ten's BCS commitment has hurt Penn State recruiting, Delany was unsympathetic. ''I've heard that it's hurting [Penn State] recruiting because Virginia Tech is more powerful,'' Delany said. ''Temple, I guess, is tougher. Rutgers is tougher. Boston College is much tougher. Pitt is a powerhouse. Virginia is really strong. Maybe [Virginia Tech coach Frank] Beamer has been able to overcome all the Penn State tradition through the BCS. ''In most cases, I'm hard-pressed to disagree with anything coach Paterno says. In this case, I very respectfully disagree.''<< In your face, Joe!
