Here is my unofficial theory. The Spooky squadron would remain constant even if they got new equipment. I was in a Navy squadron and when we got new birds we kept our squadron designation. I suspect those lucky marines and soldiers who saw puffs coming from propeller airplanes circling overhead didn't care what plane it was. The help was about 100 times more noticeable from the 130's, though. 105 mm cannon!! From the air!
