Pakistan is mostly Muslim and India is mostly Hindu. However India is officially a secular democracy ... they don't try to teach Sikh school children about Hinduism for example ... at least they didn't when I went to school there. I learned what a Hindu was when I moved to Canada at the age of 8 ... oooooh that's what all those people were ... Hindus!

I think the fact that India has a secular government is one of the reasons they have been so successful as a democracy. Keep religion and state separate and you have less problems ... especially in a country like India where they seem to have about 100 different religions!

Pakistan really seems to have a problem getting a handle on democracy ... it is currently ruled by a dictator (Musharraff). I think one of the reasons they can't make democracy work is because the extremist Muslims try to mess with the government too much. JMO
