Yep... Arafat wants ALL the benefits of being a "state" but doesn't want to provide any guarantees to Israel when it comes to sharing scarce resources that Israeli treasure and know-how went to creating (water collection/distribution).

Control over the water resources in the region could bring the Israeli economy to its knees. And I can't see anyone committing political suicide to give the PA carte blanche over it.

And he's not unreasonable about Palestinian autonmy. I think the Palestinians would get a fair shake from him, but would not obtain all the rights of a traditional state (control over airspace, or the right to enter alliances and treaties).

And any reasonable, thinking person who ponders his arguments would be forced to agree with him.

That's why I say he's on the ascendancy once again. His visibility on US talk shows is indicative of how he's seeking to win over Sharon.

Hawk
