Joe & Niceguy, Re: Intel's Goodwill

Niceguy asked about 1999 -> 2001 changes

From Intel's nice spreadsheet summary,"Goodwill and other intangibles"
1Q99 = $196M
3Q01 = $5,602M

Joe wrote: "Goodwill never increases on the books. It just gets depreciated to zero. What CAN increase the total goodwill on the books of the company is if the company makes an acquisition and pay more than the book value of the acquired company."

Intel has invested cash in acquiring other firms in every quarter since 2Q99 except for the most recent quarter. Source: same spreadsheet noted above which is available here: intel.com
