For most companies the question has been a matter of comparing current profits with prior year or prior quarter profits. It sounds like you think we'll soon have a question of profitability at all, and you expect lots more bankruptcies and forced mergers. I thought I was reasonably well hedged prior to yesterday, having sold covered calls that were in the money within days after I sold them, but most of my hedging just evaporated. One of my most reliable market indicators recently signaled bottom, so I'm of a mind that this extended bear market won't get much more bearish than it did in September. Of course, I always see the glass as half full, so I get hurt more in bear markets than a lot of folks do.
