Data General was spending more money on a declining AViion server line than the growing Clariion line so after the DG acquisition closed in 4Q99, EMC decided to manage the decline of the AViion line from $169M in 1Q00 to $66M in 2Q01 while managing the growth of the Clariion line from $98M in 1Q00 to around $240M in 2Q01. Under the terms of the deal, EMC could not dispose of Aviion until 8/2001.

I don't know what EMC's plans are for Aviion. They've already absorbed Data General's services unit into EMC Global Services and any deal would certainly allow EMC to keep DG's IP portfolio including DG's seminal patents on NUMA technology and DG's customer list, which includes more than 4,000 U.S. hospitals, so the demand for the Aviion server line may be very limited.
