Discovery Channel Examines Military Hardware in Use in Afghanistan During a Special Night of Programming October 19
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld Featured on One of His First Interviews Since the U.S. Military Campaign Against Terrorism Began
BETHESDA, Md., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, October 19, the Discovery Channel once again takes viewers beyond the headlines of the battle against the world's terrorist networks with a special night of in-depth programming about the many facets of this confusing new war. The night features the world premiere of WEAPONS OF THE NEW WAR, from 9-10 PM (ET/PT). This new program reveals the unique strategies, weapons and challenges of fighting terrorism, and explores how the United States military is confronting these threats. Among the interviews featured is Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld -- one of his first interviews since the U.S. Military campaign against terrorism began on October 7. Viewers are introduced to the airmen, commandos, intelligence agents, lawmen and decision-makers who are engaged in this battle to destroy terrorist threats. WEAPONS OF THE NEW WAR explores the military hardware being used including B-1 and B-2 Stealth bombers, F-14 Tomcats and cruise missiles. In addition, this program observes a Green Beret nighttime training scenario, a similar mission to what Special Forces could confront in Afghanistan.

Immediately following WEAPONS OF THE NEW WAR, DEADLINE DISCOVERY premieres its special presentation, America Strikes Back: The Next Phase, from 10-11 PM (ET/PT). Co-produced with NBC News, this program investigates the potential ground battle in Afghanistan including the use of Special Forces, attack helicopters, and bunker busting smart bombs. DEADLINE DISCOVERY examines the very real threat of bioterrorism -- what deadly bio-agents exist, how easily can terrorists get access to them and how can they be used? And, how have the recent terrorist attacks and the anthrax mailings changed American's thoughts and behaviors? DEADLINE DISCOVERY secured interviews with two scientists, Bill Patrick and Ken Alibek, who during the Cold War oversaw the U.S. and Soviet Germ Warfare programs respectively.

Preceding both of these world premiere programs is a one-hour encore presentation of BEHIND THE TERROR: UNDERSTANDING THE ENEMY, the highly rated and critically acclaimed documentary exploring the current terrorist threat. BEHIND THE TERROR: UNDERSTANDING THE ENEMY, airing from 8-9 PM (ET/PT) blends the unrivaled international news and archival resources of the BBC with Discovery's documentary expertise to provide a comprehensive examination of the underlying issues behind the horrifying events of Tuesday, September 11. Hosted by veteran news anchor Forrest Sawyer, the one-hour version of the original two-hour program gives viewers a detailed image of the core issues driving terrorism, and its antecedents. The special looks at what must be done to prevent further tragedies and how American society will change, perhaps forever.

DEADLINE DISCOVERY is a weekly hour-long news program, regularly airing Wednesdays from 10-11 PM (ET/PT) on the Discovery Channel.
