But, I believe Eugene Rostow's interpretation of the current situation is fairly pertinent here with regard to the West Bank being considered an unallocated section of the British Mandate. But obviously the waters are muddied depending upon what status Israel is recognising for the territories. They can rightfully claim that Jordan's annexation, regardless of whether it was recognized by the international community, was lawful. And since they went through the process of annexing it, the Israelis have the right to assert legitimate occupation of the territory given Jordan's unprovoked attack against Israel in 1967 from the West Bank. They could have claimed that, since Jordan has renounced its claim, the territory defaults to ownership by the Israelis, acceptable to being annexed into Israel. But right now, the Israelis have gone too far for annexation (except in the event of some major crisis). They have provided limited autonomy, and the right of self-government, and turned over domestic law enforcement to the Palestinian Authority. But they still have the right to assert their legitimate security concerns over the political path of the PA, and prevent those things which both violate the intent of the British Mandate for free settlement rights to Jews on the West Bank, as well as their legitimate security concerns. And as I've stated before, the West Bank economy is not sufficient to warrant or support granting independence. They are HEAVILY dependent upon Israel, both economically, and with regard to infrastructure. There's no way it can be independent, thus trying to assert that they should be is superfluous. I recommend they get their economic house in order, show they can live in peace with Israel, and accept some autonomous pseudo-state status such as Monaco, Andorra, or Liechenstein. Hawk
