I was going to post just the last paragraph on FADG, I thought it might sound better on its own. The whole thing sounds a little wimpy in parts for the drums of war crowd. But it all holds together pretty well. There was another piece by Paul Ewald posted by Jill there that's somewhat similar in outlook: Message 16519191

I find the local bluster about oil a little perplexing. In the short run, there's no way out. In the longer run, trying to run away from mideast oil is economically questionable. Short of a worldwide boycott, it's not going to hurt any mideast governments much. Plus, distancing ourselves from the Saudis and such is not going to be a moderating influence on them.

The Saudi government is no doubt distasteful, but we've worked with many distasteful governments in the past. Near term, I just don't see any less distasteful alternative.
