While it may take more hits, its financial strength is helping it gain share -- and the future looks bright in three emerging markets

As Cisco goes, so goes the sector? Olga Kharif points to John Chambers' October 3 remarks as a possible glimmer of hope and an indicator worth noting for an industry that continues to experience considerable pain. "Some more lumps may be coming" says Kharif but goes on to say that the "fog appears to be lifting" and that Cisco, given its deep pockets, may be in a position to grow its market share while its competitors struggle to stay afloat.

Areas to exploit: wireless LANs, voice-over-IP networks and network storage. The respective markets according to various forecasters

- Wireless LAN: $1.7 billion by 2004

- Voice-over-IP: $7.6 billion by 2006

- Storage networking: $15 billion by 2005

One analyst, who in spite of a recent downgrade of its stock, says the company should see an annual growth rate of 20% over the next five years: "The world needs a successful large-scale networking equipment maker, and Cisco is it."
