The strings attached to government subsidies are really steel cables wrapped in razor wire.

Years ago people tried to get me to line up for special government initiatives to get minority owned and women owned businesses to bid on government contracts. I read some of the paperwork and after my eyes got over being glazed I realized that I'd have to hire someone to deal with the paperwork and bidding process. It seemed like the kind of nightmare that I had little interest in getting involved with. Meanwhile I was too busy doing work for the private sector, anyway. Eventually I did get lots of government work but it was almost always from a third party that was willing to go through the hassle. Even when I did wind up working direct, it was always outside the normal bidding process....ah yes, it can be done and is done a lot because otherwise they'd never get anyone to work for them at anywhere near competitive rates.

Of course, I was still subject to having to earn my money twice, once when doing the work and again when trying to get paid for it.

When the government is paying the bill, there is little or no pressure to compete on price and quality, nor to address the specific desires of consumers

The flaw is in the voting system. We have to view ourselves as share holders as well as providers for government in our nation. We need to have competition for profit as this can be a road to success as proven in the Casinos in Manitoba Canada. A well run owned by the government for the people business can be profitable. It amounts to government in competition with private industry and being able to be competitive in the retail market. Someone has to start defining government as business not the product of taxation. Tax exempt should translate to profit.
