Slate is a liberal Democratic type site. Being a Chomsky-type radical leftist, I'd guess they are way too far to the right for you. Though liberal, they are still generally on the American side of things. We've only got about 5,000 troops (not counting civilians working in the oil industry) in Saudi Arabia. I don't know how many troops were there during the decades we had a refueling and training base there - I'd guess in the hundreds at least.
