I wonder if our emphasis on "stability" isn't seriously misguided. I understand the reasoning, and I do remember Iran in 1978, but our emphasis on stability there didn't get us very far. The Saudi royal family has almost succeeded in bankrupting their country, provided precious little in return for our support, and subsidize terrorists by paying blackmail to keep them out of Saudi Arabia.

I have been thinking that, were the Saudi government overthrown tomorrow, even a hostile regime would find it necessary to sell oil to the West as they have no other resources. I hope the time is at hand for a fresh appraisal of our policies with regard to "friends" like Saudi Arabia. Our supposed "enemies" are providing more assistance in our hour of need.

I am not advocating we overthrow the Saudi government or any other in the area - that would be reckless and we don't need to broaden the war. As we enter different phases in our response to recent events, I do hope we will reconsider our foreign policy.
