Israel threatens blitz
By MEGAN GOLDIN in Jerusalem

ISRAEL yesterday demanded that the Palestinian Authority hand over the killers of a cabinet minister or suffer retribution akin to the strikes on Afghanistan.

In a show of force, Israeli tanks and troops thrust into Palestinian-ruled territory near Jenin yesterday, halting on the outskirts of the West Bank city. There was no gunfire, residents reported.
Cabinet secretary Gideon Saar said Israel would "act against the Palestinian Authority in the way currently accepted by the international community to act against a leadership that supports terror" if Palestinian leader Yas- ser Arafat does not turn over Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi's killers.

He was referring to the US air strikes on Afghanistan's Taliban rulers, whom Washington accuses of harbouring Osama bin Laden.

Palestinian gunmen shot MR Zeevi, 75, dead at a Jerusalem hotel on Wednesday.

He was to be buried in a state funeral last night.

His assassination set alarm bells ringing in Washington and Europe amid concern it could spark more fighting between Israel and the Palestinians and destroy a ceasefire the US hoped would bolster Arab and Islamic support for its war against terrorism.
