Ain al-Hilweh celebrates assassination ‘Today it is Zeevi, tomorrow it will be Sharon’ Mohammed Zaatari Daily Star correspondent Palestinian refugees danced in the streets and handed out sweets in the Ain al-Hilweh camp Wednesday after news of the assassination of former Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi spread through the refugee camp in Sidon. The minister, who had resigned earlier this week, was gunned down early Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency hotel near Jerusalem. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine promptly claimed responsibility for his assassination, saying the attack was mounted to avenge the killing of the group’s leader, Abu Ali Mustafa. “I could hardly believe my ears when I heard the news about the minister’s assassination,” a PFLP member told reporters. “Now Abu Ali Mustafa can rest in his grave. “He can also laugh and dance,” the PFLP member said. Mustafa was killed by the Israelis in August. His supporters in Lebanon and elsewhere had vowed revenge. Zeevi’s death was claimed by the PFLP soon after its announcement. PFLP members in Ain al-Hilweh distributed candy and sweets to passers-by to celebrate Zeevi’s death. A PFLP vehicle, equipped with loudspeakers and PFLP banners, toured the camp broadcasting revolutionary songs and eagerly breaking the news to the camp residents. It also broadcast excerpts from past speeches by Abu Ali Mustafa. A woman called Hajja Zumurrud and dressed in traditional Palestinian clothes started expressing her joy. “Today it is Zeevi, tomorrow it will be Sharon,” she declared. Meanwhile the military commander of the PFLP unit ordered all his fighters to avoid the PFLP headquarters, especially at night, in case they were bombed by Israeli warplanes in retaliation for Zeevi’s murder. Asked whether his group considered “Zeevi’s head equal to Abu Ali Mustafa’s head,” a PFLP member replied that, “Abu Ali Mustafa was worth a big bunch of Israeli ministers put together and the fight will go on.” dailystar.com.lb DS 18/10/01
