Ob, Excellent study. Inflation is important, but so are taxes. I wonder how many more losing double decades we pick up when the tax rate is considered? Obviously, there will be fewer before the income tax was enacted. <G> Still, every very long term mountain chart you ever see has a ton of "dividends reinvested" component to it. If a chunk of those dividends go to the IRS, the reinvestment is much punier. And for many of the "great periods" of the market, tax rates on dividends were as high as 70%.
