Just got my new Diana Krall CD - another typically tasteful selection of songs. And now for an unsolicited review of another CD I got that is terrific and is by an artist I'd guess very few are familiar with: cdnow.comJAMES/itemid=1219579 If your taste runs anywhere in the direction of <Fire and Rain, Nashville Skyline*, early Willie Nelson or anything by Bob Wills, you ought to listen to James Talley. He has an excellent voice, his songs are very well written, and his arrangements are great. And as good as the music is, the accompanying autobiographical booklet would be worth the price of the CD. I saw him a couple times in a bar in DC a few years back when Jimmy Carter came to the White House. He was featured at the inauguration (say what you like about Carter the leader, he put on a great show when he came to town) and got a few bookings. I was really impressed, but then he just seemed to disappear. I couldn't even find any references to him on the internet when I was looking to replace his LP's with CD's. Turns out his was a variation on the classic story - minor "star" but his music wasn't commercial enough to get much airplay and his label did little to promote him. His agent talked him into breaking his contract and then left him to dry, never returning his phone calls. Couldn't even get any bar bookings and eked out an existence as a carpenter, delivery guy, etc. He then became a reasonably real estate agent and recently got Capitol to rerelease his earlier recordings. A nice story and very well told.
