What are the benefits of partitioning a hard drive?

For those of you who have partitioned, WHY SO? Since I'll be reformatting down the road, I thought I'd look into partioning at that time.

TIA...Pete

Read your "eeek" just now, and thought of a word of caution for those who try to dump off onto CD-RWs on their older system in prep for a reformat HD "date with destiny:"

I use a Backpack CD with myWIN95 laptop to perform databack up. I ran into this problem:
Usually I would highlight several files or an entire subdirectory and execute a drag and drop command from HD-C drive to BP-D drive using WIndows Explorer.. I ran into a couple of 500K .jpg files and WOOPS...got stuck in the endless "click and go no where fast" BP-D loop.

So, may I gently suggest if you are going to perform backup using a CD whether internal or BP, you exercise caution in the drag and drop transfer mode? Take those files over ONE at a time, and not part of a "highlighted drag and drop" cluster.

Good Luck w/the reformat! ANd good luck with the "do you want this or that" pop up questions you will get during reformatting. Some are archanely worded and its purely lucky guess. I found it helps to write down the pop up "choice" query boxes as I went along, because if something didn't work AFTER the re-format, I had an idea what to ask or answer differently the "second" reformat. Believe it or not, it took 3 re-formats, bang bang bang before I got one that worked and allowed me to reload the IE5.5 even. BUMMER!

Hope this helps.

Good computing to all!
