Slacker,

<< I haven't had a chance to listen to the call....but was Jorma talking about the market in general or Nokia's sales? >>

Market in general. As you know NOK always has a real good handle on this.

One thing that surprised me was that NOK claims they are into double digits market share in CDMA handsets worldwide (compared to 8% last year).

They are claiming 34% market share on 94 million handset units shipped overall (which would be 32 million units) and expecting to increase back in Q4.

EDGE transceivers shipping November (first time they have focused on EDGE in a CC) for the UltraSites they have been shipping since Q2, with software to follow that. No mention of EDGE handsets (private statements have been Q2), but commented on EDGE being commercial in US end of 2002 and in Europe 2003.

Q&A was disrupted by some latency a couple bad connections and not as interesting as usual. I don't know if I got disconnected at end or the CC had ended but I was waiting for a question on their CDMA market share, projections on same, and intro of their 1x models, but there were none that I heard. I'll relisten when archived after grabbing the slides.

re: Cingular Technology Flip

Message 16578786

This comes as no surprise to anyone. If anything the official announcement decision was overdue.

If anyone is interested Cingular is holding a Web cast Press Conference at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time this morning.

videonewswire.com

As Qualcomm investors this is not especially good news.

However, with 3 nationwide (2.5G) 3G GSM EDGE (WCDMA) networks ...

* AWS
* Cingular
* VoiceStream

... and two nationwide (2.5G) 3G cdma2000 1XRTT (HDR) networks ...

* Verizon
* Sprint PCS

... and several strong regional (2.5G) 3G cdma2000 1xRTT (1xEV-DV) networks ...

* Qwest
* ALLTEL

... the American wireless consumer will benefit from the competition and the USA potentially becomes a driver of wireless data services rather than the driven.
