Then you misunderstand what the pursuit of understanding means. It has nothing to do with ignoring evidence or equalizing "sides".

Then you misunderstand my point. I don't want to ignore evidence, I just don't want to start with the assumption that the other side is correct. The evidence that exists can be brought forth as part of the argument. The "sides" become unequal when evidence or logic shows that one opinion makes more sense then the other, rather then one side being assumed to be correct from the begining. If we could agree from the begining that some particular viewpoint was correct then there would be no need to have the debate in the first place.
