Why would the Pentagon want it reported where U.S. troops are in operation?

Fear, disinformation, deception - I can think of many reasons.

Certainly the radio broadcasts into Afghanistan are playing up the fear angle.

Those guys are pros, they surely know what gets reported and what does not and will make their plans to take advantage of both secrecy and openness.

I'll tell you:

During the Gulf war, all the networks just before the ground attack began, were told by the military that an attack in Kuwait was just beginning from the sea and that the Iraqi Republican guard was in position waiting and prepared. What was actually happening was an end-around tank assault from a desert location that no one thought could be traversed. A complete surprise to everyone: the enemy, the media, and those watching on TV.

Swartzkohf and the military manipulated the media intentionally to create the element of surprise, which resulted in a complete romp of Iraqi troops.

If it's on TV, they want it to be on TV for good reason, either to lull the enemy or scare the enemy or surprise the enemy, not at all to harm our soldiers.
