Dear Albert:

Debt reduction can cost money if you want to reduce it before maturity. Just look at the discussion about treasury debt prior to September 11. You have to pay people a premium to give up public debt due to its other intangibles. Matter of fact, you may not be able to buy some issues at almost any price. Some of the AMD debt reduction was to pay a premium to force calling in of the debt early. That comes directly out of earnings (lose a little now for gaining far more in the long run).
