i am not going to speak for those two guys. i will simply reiterate that milton friedman said the statement in a letter in 1997. btw, i'm not claiming that milton friedman is a protectionist or anything like that. he's a free trader. he simply doesn't attribute the prolonging of the depression to the smoot-hawley tariff, regardless of his views on trade.

perhaps when they said, "friedman confirms this", they meant the part about the fed and the money supply, not the tariff.
