Czechoslovakia was a multinational state that had emerged from the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I. usip.org The Munich settlement effectively dismembered Czechoslovakia. But it did not stave off war. In subsequent months, Slovakia broke away from the Czechs, forming a Nazi puppet state. The Poles and Hungarians seized parts of the weakened Czechoslovak state. Finally, the Nazis marched into Prague on March 15, 1939, ending the short life of an independent, democratic Czechoslovakia. This was the prelude to World War II, which commenced in September with the Nazi invasion of Poland.
