I'd consider that to be a macro-economic effect. Didn't Warren Buffett disparage the value of individual investors expanding energy on macro-economic considerations?

Agreed, and yes, he did. I'm not suggesting one should do such a thing, merely that what Judith named as a missing piece was readily available.

It bears keeping in mind that Buffett's suggestion of ignoring macro factors goes hand in hand with his insistence on a margin of safety in valuation, which in practice reduces the impact of other risk factors. But if one is going to play using a different strategy than Buffett, e.g., ignoring company specific valuation, then one should not expect the same kind of results.
