Up to 200 Army Rangers are fighting Taliban forces, Fox News Channel reported Friday night. The arrival of small numbers of U.S. troops in northern and southern Afghanistan signals not a conventional ground offensive but instead a shift to a broader military response after nearly two weeks of aerial bombings, the Associated Press quoted officials as saying. "Special operations troops such as the Army's Green Berets perform many different missions, including assistance to opposition forces and collection of intelligence. Special forces in southern Afghanistan are supporting the CIA's effort to encourage ethnic Pashtun leaders to break away from the Taliban militia," AP reported. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the United States was coordinating with anti-Taliban forces, including rebels in northern Afghanistan. ``There is good coordination from the air with the ground in some places, particularly in the north,'' Rumsfeld said Friday during a flight to Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., to visit with crews of B-2 stealth bombers. ``There is not that kind of coordination as of yet in the south.'' U.S. special forces are supporting intelligence efforts to undermine the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, and military action could escalate in coming days, Fox News Channel quoted a U.S. official as saying. A "senior government official" told Fox there were three teams on the ground — two working with Afghan rebels in the south and a third "search and destroy" team south of Kabul. The teams usually consist of a dozen soldiers. "Fifteen or 20 troops will be able to do nothing," Taliban embassy spokesman Sohail Shaheen scoffed. "If they want to send in soldiers, they should send in 100,000. Then it can be a fight between our soldiers and theirs."newsmax.com
