If every compiler enhancement took years of verification, we'd never see new compiler releases.

Well, I would guess that we see new compiler releases about as frequently as we see new processor releases. And that is for the same reason that it takes AMD/Intel several years to ship a processor or Microsoft several years to ship an OS. The end user does not see this big division between the hardware and software. If they want five nines availability it doesn't mean that it is OK for the OS to crash provided the hardware wasn't the cause.

Put it another way, that you might find more acceptable. What is the more common cause of system crashes, the hardware or the software? So, is a solution that increases the complexity of the software likely to win in a server environment, where stability is key?
