Gopher, The compiler can be corrected in code and tested at high speed more rapidly by the use of many test systems that run in parallel than can corrections on silicon , thus saving loads of time in finding the funny interactions that line change will make in some strange program.

Gopher, recompiling a compiler was a lot easier than taping out new silicon. The former takes about a few hours; the latter takes several weeks. That in itself makes revising silicon tougher by an order of magnitude.
