Fortunatly this is true. Unfortunatly you have Mao, and Hitler, and Pol Pot all in the same century. Before that perhaps the Mongols.

Peasants were the property of the nobles, there was a womb to the tomb plan, they were born to be pushed around and had not our conception of ownership.

I wouldn't call the serfs members of a communal farm in the normal sense of the word. Also the serfs were "freed" (I use the quotes because they where hardly really free after this) in 1861. Some of them did own land after that. Actually many of them theoretically owned the land but where in debt because they where supposed to pay the value of the land when they where freed. It was mostly this crushing debt that made them not very free.
