Actually, I don't disagree with anything you said. The Afghanis wanted the Soviets out, we helped them achieve that. Had we continued our presence, we would have been accused by the Left of interference and "cultural imperialism." Instead they now accuse us of neglect and abandonment. Can't win. And "lots of local control" might work just fine. Allow each little medieval group to stay medieval in its own way. Assuming, of course, some strongman doesn't arise and go for the whole thing.
