Why don't states collect federal income taxes now? If you know American history well, the answer is easy and the answer completely refutes the possibility of national sales tax unless one wants to rewrite the structure of law in the US.The states seem to be able to differentiate, and of course, there can be a lot of theoretical errors that may not really be significant unless they produce some really bad incentives, like, say, the present system. How does the national government know that the state government isn't cheating? The pseudo rebates would be handled by the SS administration. (fixed amount checks, not requiring any documentation other than identity existence) What rebates? The ones needed to be concocted in order to achieve uniformity or "fairness"?The single point retail tax places the support of the Federal Government out in the open, with no place left to hide, including no more wage withholding. Part of the problem is that "single point" is fictitious. It's a mental creation that can't be made substantial. In practice a great deal of bureaucracy must be put in place in order isolate or keep isolated "single points". What's wrong with the "single point" of the individual tax paper who has the sole responsibility to pay? Then the bureaucracy is moved to where it should be, with the individual who is the beneficiary of the purpose behind tax, so the bureaucracy doesn't exist anywhere but with every paying individual. There are many other points which make the flat tax superior. One is the challenge to an individual to accede to the honor of being able to pay. You don't get that with a national tax which is effectively invisible. It's like the restaurants that won't let you tip in cash because they tell you the tip is already in the bloated prices or already and clandestinely charged to your card. When I come across that kind of operation I give one of the restaurant's help a $10 bill and walk out without ordering. Another is ah who cares.
