>>How Not to Conduct Foreign Policy<<<

I think that we are getting a rare glimpse of how not to conduct foreign policy by Israel. Look what they have done recently.

1) Elements of the Israeli government and the civilian population wants Arafat to be assasinated. Because they believe him to be a terrorist. Now if you are Arafat why would you want to negotiate a peace treaty with those that want to see you assasinated. Do you really think that your neighbor is going to be nice to you if you tell everyone that you think a death contract on him is in order?

2) The US government is trying to build some kind of concensus among all nations against all terrorists. Does anyone in their right mind have any idea what the assasination of Arafat would do such an alliance?

3) Israel vs their own citizens... suppose that Sharon does negotiate a peace with the Palestineans and Arafat. From what I have read a large part of the Israeli population will be pissed because their government negotiated with a terrorist. So the government loses another round and perhaps a new government is formed.

4)Israel has to decide what Palestine is... Is it going to be a country responsible for itself or is it going to be a permanent territory of Israel? Israel has a lot more latitude if Palestine remains a territory, subjugated to Israel. As a territory they send in their troops and tanks in at their will. If Palestine was a country, this would not be allowed.

5) I believe that Arafat is sitting tight, doing nothing, because the current Israeli government may not be around that much longer.

I think that the current time is a rare period in history where one can see that every policy that Israel tries works to their disadvantage. The only thing similar to Israel's predicament was the collapse of colonialism around the world that took place between 1945 and 1975.No matter what the European colonialists tried everything went wrong.

Israel has about ten years of time to resolve the Palestinean situation. People our age recall the horrors of the Second World War and the terrible things that took place in the concentration camps. But in talking with people twenty five years younger, World War11, become like the Civil War...just a distant memory. This probably means less political support for Israel down the road.(from our citizens).

Keep in mind that the above is just an opinion. How things play out, we will know in a few years. But historically it is interesting.
