When the captain announced that the plane was returning to the gate, four male passengers described as Middle Eastern in appearance stood up and began urgently consulting with each other, two aviation officials said. The men refused orders from flight attendants to return to their seats ... "As soon as the door opened, these four guys bolted," said one of the officials.

I've thought since 9/11 that the historic grounding was an exceptional move under the circumstances, probably by one under enormous pressure not to, or to wait for more information, and that it probably saved a lot of lives. I know that other sources (the '93 bombing trial) indicates that perhaps 12 planes were earmarked. I think the grounding was an American surprise for bin Laden, totally unexpected.
