No, Dell is taking advantage of people who want the next new OS first.

JMHO.

It's a discount program. You pay less if you upgrade more frequently. If you're saying that Apple customers always pay full price for upgrades no matter how loyal they are then that's an interesting business philosophy, but it does nothing to encourage customers to stay current. In what sense is a customer running a four year old Mac who's committed to "saving money" by never upgrading an asset to Apple?

Once again, nobody cares how component costs are allocated within a system price. Do you really believe there are many customers who are going to say "Gosh, I'm saving hundreds with these new prices, but I'd rather pay more to spite Microsoft"? Maybe there are some who think that way, but not many.

<< Hey, has anybody else noticed that if you order a Windows XP system from Dell it costs $60 more than a Windows 2000 or Windows 98SE machine? >>

Dave, The cost of the old out of date software has dropped. The price of XP is the same.

Old software at a discount.

Want to explain how you see discounting old software as a monopolist abusing its power?

"Apple doesn't charge more for an upgrade from an older system than from a more recent system."

Apple won't give me an upgrade to Mac OS X for my PowerBook G3.
I have to have to upgrade to more recent hardware.
I have to have more memory.
I have to have 1.5 GB of disk space.

So it's not free for me.
