I don't think they see it as lying...they just regard the truth as too precious to be given away to strangers. In the West, a common dilemma in fiction is "stick with my buddies or tell the truth?" I don't think this is a dilemma in the Arab world, but rather a no-brainer -- of course you stick with your buddies and say whatever is necessary to say.

They allow their children to root around in garbage dumps, while the elite "princely" leaders are adorned with gold and diamonds. They allow terrorists to operate freely within their counties, as long as the elite "princely" leaders can steal their share of oil revenues. We need an alternative to oil. America has the know-how to replace oil with a renewable alternative energy source. When are we going to get the resolve to do this?
