George, we will never "defeat terrorism" per se since terrorism is easy to mount at low levels, and there will always be individuals and groups with a grudge and the willingness to commit violence against US interests.

That has been true since at least the 1972 Munich attack and maybe earlier. We have to get used to it.

I would guess the Pentagon planners are smart enough to realize the stupidity of occupying Afghanistan to defeat international terrorism and getting bogged down in exactly the protracted struggle the Afghans are good at. Every time they want to hit us, we won't be there. Mobility rules. Anything that twitches that we don't like, we blow it up. They won't cause much trouble then.

Since this is a No Politics thread I will shut up here.
