The Israelis WERE WILLING to compromise, but Arafat COULDN'T, because of the extremism he had fostered and used to bring the Israelis to the table and chase the Jordanians away from asserting their claim.

There was a good cartoon to this effect in today's Boston Globe (not on line, unfortunately). Arafat is sitting on a bench between two large and menacing masked suicide bombers. Arafat looks embarrassed and is saying, "Er...I just remembered...I'm a moderate"

Looks like the real offensive may be starting against the PA. The US Ground offensive in Afghanistan provides media cover for it. From Debka (usual Debka warnings apply):
