Joan,

It has been very hard for them to recruit since the academic standards for entry are very high.

Exactly why this argument of PSU's biggest problem now being all recruiting related is bogus. There's no way a team like N/W can recruit better than us. Look at S. Carolina recently & Maryland this year. It's amazing what good coaching can do with just a little talent.

It's a coaching thing too.

Gary

NU has been in the Big 10 from the very beginning. Back when the University of Chicago was the football power. It was geography.

It wasn''t until the late '60s that they really became uncompetitive in football. They do compete pretty well in the second tier sports. The Big 10 splits the football bowl money equally among the member schools, and NU's share finances the entire athletic dep't. budget. That's why they'll never leave the Big 10.

I remember going to homecoming against Wisconsin in 1995. It was their first sellout since 1962.

You have to remember that NU is in greater Chicago, and they have a lot of competition for the fans' dollars. Plus, with only 10,000 or so students, they don't have the built-in student fan base to help fill the stadium. When I was a student there, in the dark days of the early-mid '80s, they consistently drew around 30,000 for home games, which is pretty good considering they never won.
