re:foreign legion - a LOT of our people would go

there are 100's of thousands in this country chomping at the bit, who don't fit the normal profile, ranging from outright mercenary to peace corps, aged 18 - 60, all w. something to contribute.

Some intermediate, flexible corps, with an international political cost should evolve, as well as an American-only version domestically for Homeland Defense, driven by mandatory public service 2 weeks/yr from the age of 17 - 50.

More participation is all that can protect against the next few years of attempted surprise attacks. We successfully defended against many such attacks up to and thru the Y2K incidents, but they are more determined now, or we are more susceptible, or something...

it's a brilliant idea for any democracy; no we won't send our boys, we'll send somebody ELSE's boys.

Personally, I would like any US foreign legion to be dedicated to international peace-keeping missions where US casualities and media attention can sap the will on the part of the people (Somalia... Kosovo.. Bosnia.. :0) After all, the American sentiment is "what the hell are doing risking our lives for these ungrateful wretches??"..

And since they would be "light infantry" units, it would free up US units to do the training they need to be doing for fighting large conflicts, not brushfire wars and international police missions.

And besides, there are more than enough "boys" willing to fight to obtain French citizenship.. I can only imagine how many would volunteer to join to obtain US citizenship.
