This line is classic: But Mr. Oxley seems to think that America is imperiled if its companies can no longer overstate earnings by misrepresenting their employee costs.

Why even pretend anymore -- just give companies the legal power to lie through their teeth, and we can all enjoy a new bubble that really will be different this time, with a new, permanently higher plateau. All will be wealthy, and all will live happily ever after. Terrorism will end, as will hunger and road rage. And somebody besides that Yankees will win the World Series. <g>
