Never knew you asked the question before now.

Wall Street Journal had an interesting article last week about companies laying off people right and left ... showing them the front door ... then hiring their replacements via the back door the same day. A lot of these layoffs blamed on the economic slowdown are just an excuse to get rid of older workers. You really are naive if you think that companies are laying off workers in this climate simply to ensure profitability.

A lot of this is a ploy to get rid of older workers so as to lower the company's health-care premiums, reduce its pension obligation, etc.

That's one of the reasons why 16 million working Americans carry a union card in their wallet.
